Wash n Go Curls - My Regimen 2012

Here's a quick update! I cut my hair into long layers and my curls are really happy with the new shape. I decided to do a wash n go to see how my hair would fall. I'm extremely happy with the results. Here are the products and method I used to achieve this style.

Wash n Go Regimen 2012

Products:

Agadir Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner
Tresemme Naturals Conditioner
Large tooth comb
Dryer with diffuser and concentrated nozzle attachments.

Steps to Achieve Wash n Go Curls:

1. Shampoo with a sulfate free cleanser

2. Condition and detangle with a large tooth comb.

3. Apply Tresemme Conditioner ( or any other silicone free leave in product) finger comb and style without rinsing out.

4. Gently dry hair with a diffuser without disturbing the curls.

5. Once hair is about 80% dry, gently stretch curls using a concentrated nozzle at the roots for volume.

6. Flip head down, shake, and fluff...... you're done!

Disclaimer:

I rarely do wash n go's because I have a hard time making this style last. This is a one day style for me, until I find a way to make it last longer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Natural Hair: Air Drying Twist And Braids With A Hat!

It took me a little while to figure out how to air dry my hair without walking around in large braids or twist. My natural hair takes time to air dry, ( usually over 8 hours when twisted or braided) so I had to figure out a quick solution for public outings.

There are a few naturals that don't mind walking around in large braids or twist while their hair dries, I'm not one of them lol. I prefer to wearing a hat which also keeps my head warm in colder months. What method do you use to air dry your braid and twist outs?

This week, Cantu Hair Care Products are buy one get one free. I picked up two Shea Butter leave in conditioning repair creams.

I tried this product in the beginning of my natural hair journey and I remember that I really liked how it made my hair feel and look when I did twist outs. The only draw back with Cantu Shea Butter is that it does not mix well with other products. Other then that, it's pretty good. Have you used any products from the Cantu Hair Care line?

Fairy Knots : Single Strand Knots On Hair Ends

Causes and solutions to those dreaded Fairy Knots
" Hair knots that are so tiny only a fairy could have tied them!"

Over the years I've notice that the center of my head requires alot more attention then the rest of my hair. No matter what I do I need to pay special attention to this area. When I don't, those dreaded single strand knots come back to haunt my hair. Traditionally, this is commonly know as a form of split ends. But nontraditionally it's not shown in the single strand knotted fashion. Curly hair is very prone to this because the strand may split and then curl back into itself thus forming a knot.
Here are a few things you can do to combat these fairy knots without loosing length.

1. First assess your hair. If you find a few strands with this problem, remove them one at a time with sharp shears to get a blunt end.

2. Step up that moisture. Use cowashing and a creamy leave-in conditioner in addition to your regular hair moisturizer.

3. Deep Condition weekly.

4. Use a denman brush to gently detangle your hair while it's fully coated with conditioner. This will help distribute the product while gently working any potential knots out.

5. Be cautious! If you have this problem and don't care for it promptly it will just get worst!

Healthy Hair Diet?

Sometimes people ask me if I follow a certain diet in order to get healthy hair. The answer to that question is....... I try! About a year and a half ago, I adopted a Pescatarian way of eating. Basically, I eat fruits, vegetables, grains, and seafood. Some call it a form of vegetarianism but, I call it a way of life.

There are several reasons why I decided to eat this way, aside from my quest for healthy hair. I had a few annoying digestive problems that caused me great discomfort and pain. I also had an extremely hard time digesting certain meats like beef and pork.

Why Did I Start This "Healthy Hair Diet" ?

Well, like I stated above, I had some health issues that forced me take a good look at what I was consuming. At first, I thought that it was the amount of carbs I ate so I began to eliminate them. I lost 50lbs in 6 months but my digestive problems became worst, so I stopped and tried calorie counting. I believe that my hair was in it's worst shape during this time period. My hair was relaxed then, and I had a good amount of shedding as well.

It wasn't until I heard a lecture on the human life cycle, that I found out about Pescatarinism. Mediterranean people follow this way of life. They also live the longest because of their diet. This really sparked my interest, so I went online and did a little research. I already had a hard time digesting certain meats and I LOVE seafood, so I decided to give it a go! That was June of 2010, and I've been eating this way ever since.

Does Being Pescatarian Promote Healthy Hair?

A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamin A promotes healthy hair! Just keep track of what you eat and bump up the foods containing these essential ingredients.

Do You Take Vitamins For Hair Growth?

I DO NOT take vitamins currently but, after uploading a video on youtube and getting great advice from MyHairFetish, I'm going to pick up raw vitamins in the near future. In the video, I expressed how vitamins made me extremely nauseous (seriously puking up my guts) and she suggested that I try them instead. They're made without binders or fillers that commonly cause upset stomachs in certain people. I will update you when I start taking them.

Doobie/Saran Wrap | Transitioning Hairstyle

A saran wrap, also known as a doobie wrap, is a method used to make hair straighter after a roller set. The healthy way of straightening hair without direct heat is achieved during this process. This style is great for those who are transitioning to natural hair. You can use saran wrap to smooth your hair or use large bobby pins to secure a doobie wrap. (Natural hair may revert using the saran wrap method. Steam may result from the combination of heat and plastic)

Things You’ll Need:

Large Bobby Pins
Hair net
Paper strips or wrap net
Paddle brush
Moisturizer
Hooded dryer

Moisturize
After the roller set is completely dry, add moisturizer spreading evenly throughout hair.

Doobie Method
Make a part on the side of your head and use a paddle brush to move hair behind your ear. Using a pin secure the hair in place. Move the hair in the same direction towards the nape of the neck and pin into place. Still, brushing in the same direction brush the remainder of hair over top of the other ear around to the forehead and pin into place. At this point your hair should be completely wrapped and secure. Another alternative to using pins is to use santex strips or a wrap net.

Saran Wrap Method
Instead of using bobby pins to set the wrap, use a few long sheets of saran wrap. Wrap tightly allowing the saran wrap to shrink onto the head. After hair is dry, it should easliy break away by pulling at the loose strips.

Drying
If you choose, you can allow the hair to set naturally with the heat from your body. Perhaps the easiest way is to leave it wrapped and allow it to set overnight. You can also sit back under the dryer for 15 minutes to set your doobie. After it's set add your favorite shine serum, style and enjoy!

Night Care

Moisturize, seal and wrap hair with a satin or silk scarf nightly. This style should last up to 1 week.

The first thing that pops into many peoples heads when you talk about protective styles is braids. Many woman are able to grow their hair long with this method. Some have even grown their hair from shoulder length to waist length.

However, wearing any protective style that keeps the hair ends protected will help you grow your hair long within a few months. If you are persistent and keep your hair moisturized daily you can retain 1/2 inch of new growth per month.

If you're looking for a less long term protective style you may want to try braid outs or twist outs. This option allows you to clean and maintain your hair by replacing the style every week.

The most popular and quickest way to wear a protective style is the bun. There a many variations to wearing a bun style. A favorite of mines is the donut bun.

A great way to achieve shiny bouncy curly hair without heat, is with the use of satin rollers. Satin rollers are nothing more then tradtional sponge rollers with a satin sleve. The satin is in place to protect our hair ends from drying out. Curly hair is just a matter of setting and forgetting! Great style for transitioning from relaxed to natural hair.

Satin Roller Set

1. After deep conditioning use a leave in conditioner and a setting foam to help lock curls in.

2. Allow hair to air dry (slightly damp)

3. Apply product and roll hair on satin rollers.

4.You will sleep comfortably and all the rollers will stay in place if you cover your hair with a scarf before going to sleep.

5. In the morning apply a little moisturizer and seal with oil. Be sure not to disturb the curls to much.

6. Pull the curls apart to shape and style.

7. For a finishing touch you can use a silk or satin scarf as a head band.

Your hair will be shiny, bouncy and Curly for days with satin rollers.

Hair Grows From The Scalp

Ever so often, I get a question from someone who believes that hair grows from the ends and not the scalp. The scalp is where the hair follicle is, and this is where the hair grows from.

I guess it would make sense to believe that hair grows from the ends if it seems like you're not obtaining length. Hair length comes from preserving hair ends. If you want to grow long hair, start by getting a really good trim. Then begin your healthy hair care regimen. Incorporate a weekly deep conditioner and a daily moisturizer into your regimen. Document you hair growth by taking pictures. Before you know it, you'll be maintaining and growing hair to new lengths!

Big Chop - I Miss My Wash And Go Hair

My wash and go hair was so much faster and easier to do. I actually miss the shorter length. Right now, I feel as though my hair is going through an awkward stage. I know if I'm patient, this too shall pass. Don't get me wrong, I love having longer hair, it's just that I have the awkward stage blues. Here's a review on the site Tightly Curly.com. After spending some time reading about Teri and her hair, and then little more time on the blog, I must say, her story is remarkable! I admire the fact that she didn't throw in the towel and give up on her hair. Her journey started as a child and along the way she's tried it all. Press and curls, jheri curls, relaxers, hair dye, and even at one point, locks!

Her regimen seems simple enough. Using conditioner as a primer she is able to keep her hair manageable and frizz free. Another fascinating thing about Teri's journey is that she hasn't trimmed her hair since cutting the relaxed ends off over 10 years ago! Over all I think this site is a great read for anyone transitioning or already natural. Relaxed ladies can benefit as well but beware, she does NOT suggest chemicals or heat for hair. Just a heads up!

Hair Shedding, Breakage and Split Ends

If you've ever been plagued with hair issues such as shedding, breakage or split ends the treatment is usually just a change of products or regimen. Let’s take a look at some of the causes behind these common hair issues while addressing how to treat them.

Hair Breakage

From time to time I receive an email, simply stating “ Help! My hair is breaking and it won’t stop!” Well the first thing that I always say is "calm down!" I know that our hair is very important to us as women but how we perceive our hair is of greater importance. If you begin to think that you have difficult hair you may find it hard to believe that anything can be done to cure your hair issues.

The most common cause of hair breakage is dryness. When anything is dry it has the tendency to become weak. Think about how your skin feels and looks when it’s dry. Skin can crack and bleed. Hair is no different. Using a good natural moisturizer and oil will benefit your hair in two ways. It deeply penetrates the air shaft and also helps to soften and smooth the cuticle. Deep conditioning is equally important. Remember if your hair is chemically altered ( hair relaxers and dyes) make sure to deep condition weekly!

Another common cause behind hair breakage are hair tools. Using metal free elastics and satin or silk hair accessories will help prevent breakage. These items may cost a little more but it’s a great hair care investment. Get rid of small tooth combs and hard bristle brushes too. Replace these with wide tooth combs and plastic covered bristle brushes instead. Shedding
Shedding can be a tricky one. There are many biological and regimen factors that can cause shedding. A few of them are hormonal, medications, hair products, scalp conditions, poor diet, and stress. Basically, you have to use process of elimination when it comes to shedding. A good rule of thumb is too assess your health with a professional health care provider. It could be as simple as an adjustment to medication or some form of scalp treatment for a fungus, another common aliment that causes shedding and hair loss. Also, hair sheds as apart of our natural hair cycle, so seeking one on one help from a cosmetologist or dermatologist can quickly rule out the many causes of hair shedding.

Spilt Ends
In order to repair and prevent split ends, you must pay special attention to hair ends. Begin with a good trim or hair dusting. Once you have even and split free hair use a natural hair oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil to seal the moisture into your ends daily. Reduce the amount of heat that you apply to the hair shaft and ends. Opt for roller sets instead of flat irons and air dry instead of using a hand held dryer. The less direct heat the better. If you do choose to use heat be sure to apply a heat protectant first. Use protective styling, and as mentioned above deep condition hair often.

Protecting Hair With A Satin Pillow Case

I purchased a new satin pillowonline and it arrived today. It feels lovely. This material is a bit thicker then the cheaper ones, and it has a hidden zipper to keep the pillow case on through the night as you toss and turn.

I like it so much that I decided to buy another one today :)

Sidenote: Satin pillow cases are soft and comfortable to sleep on but did you know that they also protect your hair while you sleep? Your hair will retain moisture and be protected from breakage during bedtime. This is especially good for those rough sleepers (like myself) who have a hard time keeping their satin or silk scarf on through the night. Sweet dreams :)

Drawstring Bonnet Fix

A youtube subscriber was nice enough to send me this quick fix for repairing a Adjustable Drawstring Bonnet.

Hello,
I left this comment for the video title: "Satin Scarf Silk Bonnet How to Keep Them On At Night" (I'm not sure about the title, sorry :-| ). The comment/explanation was entirely too long so I removed it. But I wanted to tell you there is a simply way to fix a drawstring bonnet that has had its drawstring removed. You will need a safety pin, depending on the size of the opening in your bonnet, you will use a large safety pin or small one. I learned this trick from my mother as a child when my drawstring came out of my favorite pajamas, so this trick works for any drawstring piece of clothing. You will take one end of the drawsting and insert & pin the safety pin through the VERY END of the drawstring, now take the safety pin that has the pinned drawstring attached to it and place it into one of the openings of the bonnet.

Now you can start "threading" the safety pinned drawstring through the bonnet. What you are going to do is hold one end of the safety pin (that is now inside the opening in the bonnet) in one hand & take the other hand & start pushing the material of the bonnet along the safety pin. When the material starts to bunch, hold the front part of the safety pin & then let the other end go & smooth the bunched bonnet material along the safety pin. Now repeat the process by holding the end of the safety pin in one hand & pushing the material along with the other. What you should be doing is inching the safety pinned drawstring through the bonnet. This technique may seem kind of slow & irritating but soon you'll get the feel of it and you'll be through the other opening of the bonnet in no time at all. So now you have the drawstring threaded back through the bonnet & of course you can now remove the safety pin from the end of the drawstring. This tecnnique will save you $$$ in the long run so you won't have to toss out any more separated drawstring bonnets, lol. See, told you this was a LONG comment, sorry about that! Anyway, I hope you get what I'm trying to say. Oh, before I forget, I don't know how you wash your bonnets but if you put them in the washer like me, what I like to do for the drawstring bonnet is take the drawstring bow loose and get a tiny safety pin and pin both ends of the drawstrings together with the safety pin. Doing this insures that I don't have to worry about the drawstring coming out of the bonnet during the wash. I usually let my bonnets air dry. My oldest drawstring bonnet is over 5 years old, lol. I had satin bonnets even when I was a relaxed girl.

2011 was a difficult year for me. I didn't take the best care of myself because I was super busy. I didn't deep condition regularly like I had in the past. I still used the many healthy hair methods that I discuss in this blog but, I could have been more consistent. Here are the things I plan to do in 2012 to reach mid-back length.

Review As A Leave In Treatment:

Cashmere curls was used on my freshly washed and conditioned hair. I applied it while damp, sealed with oil, and then did a chunky twist. Below is a video review showing you the final results.

Conclusion:

Cashmere curls made my hair very easy to detangle and twist. It was a pleasant surprise considering that it was not mentioned under the product description. It gave my hair great slip and allowed me to get through my twist out much easier then my previous leave in.

It has a tacky consistency that disappears when dry. It smells like mango, and the scent evaporated after my hair was dry.

I attempted doing a wash and go, with this product alone but, my hair type requires a heavier product.

As a leave in, it worked well. The product information suggests that with regular use, Cashmere Curls will repair hair damage and restore shine. I'm curious to see the progress that my hair makes as a result of this.

Deep Conditioners With Protein Are Bad For Curly Hair?

What should you look for when buying a

deep condition?

When buying a deep conditioner make sure that you choose one that has healthy ingredients. Products with humectants, oils, and shea butter are good ones to choose from.

If your deep conditioner is loaded with protein, your hair may experience protein overload so be sure to buy products with moisturizing ingredients.

Exercise is great for health but is it good for our hair? The short answer is " Yes"!

Exercise helps to promote blood flow and circulation around the entire body which also includes our scalps. The key to healthy hair after workouts is to keep it clean and moisturized.

Co-Washing After Workouts

Depending on how much you sweat, you may need to add an extra wash day to your regimen. I personally, have to co-wash often because I sweat profusely when working out.

Reminder: Using shampoo to often will dry your hair out. If you choose to shampoo, do so only once a week!

Work Out Schedule

Try adjusting your workouts to where cardio is 3x's a week. These days should coincide with your normal co-wash days. The other two days are dedicated to weight training. You won't sweat as much during these sessions so you can skip co-washing.

Hair Styles For Working Out

Protective styles during intense workouts are an easy option for curly hair. Once you reach your weight loss goals, you can maintain your fitness level by less rigorous work outs which may result in less sweating and hair styling manipulation.

How Does It Work?

What Does It Do For The Hair?

After undergoing the treatment, cleints are reported to have stronger, smoother, damage free hair. Over all, manageabilty increases, and the hair is noticably shinier. The Brazilian Keratin Treatment usually last anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, then hair reverts back to it's natural curly state after the product wears off. The cost of the treatment in salons is $250 and up.

The Process

Once the hair is washed several times with a clarifying shampoo ( to remove all dirt and oils ), it's then blown straight with dryer. Once the hair is dry, the Keratin treatment is applied with a perm or color brush. The person doing this, should be wearing gloves throughout the entire process. The hair is then blown dry once again and then flat ironed. On a high heat setting, the flat iron is passed through each section of hair several times to ensure the bonding takes effect.

The Up Keep

After the process is through, the client is asked to reframe from shampooing the hair for 72hours. This will allow the Brazillian Keratin Treament to last longer. Use only sulfate free shampoos and conditioners.

Straightening Curly Hair

There's no mystery involved when it comes to straightening curly hair. Black hair does not need to be chemically straighten in order to achieve a relaxed look. I will share a few tips to help you get started. At the end of this post, is a list of the tools and products that I personally use.

Always begin with clean hair. Cleanse your curly hair with a sulfate free shampoo. Follow that up with a moisturizing conditioner or deep penetrating treatment. Towel blot hair, then separate into four sections. Apply leave-in-conditioner and heat protectant to each section, then detangle. Dry each section with a handheld hair dryer.

UPDATE: I now use hollywood beauty olive oil ( heat protectant ) to coat my hair and scalp before flat ironing.

Without applying anymore product ( the key to getting bouncy and light hair) begin to flatiron using a ceramic model flat plate. This will aid in smoothness, shine, and retaining moisture

When finished, add a shine or smoothing serum. A light oil may be used. You hair will be shiny bouncey and soft!

Add oil and wrap your hair nightly. Cover your hair with a satin or silk scarf. This style should last 7 to 10 days.

Some insight into the Cowash and how to clean your hair with conditioners instead of shampoo.

Trading in Shampoo for Cowashing

After much thought and consideration I've decided to end my relationship with shampoo. Can you believe shampoo has been in my life every since I was a few days old. I can see all of the frowns and looks of disapproval. Questions like "How do you keep your hair clean?" or "Isn't that unsanitary?" Well I certainly would not recommend this approach for people who wrestle with pigs in mud puddles but, as for me, this option is best.

When I went natural a few years ago my biggest mistake was shampooing my hair almost daily. My second biggest mistake was putting globs of "Eco Styler" and "Queen Helene" gel in my hair daily. See, back then I really didn't care about the health of my hair. For me it was all about the style. As a stylist, how you turned out a head is what mattered back in the day. Yes, I was a finger waving, water fall curling---stacked curl with the spray color on the side stylist! The era that I went to beauty school, was when style took precedence over health.

When I look back, some of the things we did to achieve the ultimate hair art, was really weird. I remember telling clients to hold their weave so I could put rods on it to put in the microwave! You would have a curly weave in a matter of minutes! Awwwww, those were the days! Thank God those days are over.

So the question stands. Did you loose hair? What about shedding? Well, my motto back then was, " anything can be fixed with a piece of weave"! Yikes! Yes, the glue in kind that was removed with a whole bottle of baby oil. Oddly, enough all of us " city girls", were doing it. Now the revolution of healthier and greener living has surfaced. Be prepared to see healthy long flowing textures from all hair types.

Now, that I'm done with my rant, back to the title of this post. It's over with me and "shampoo". I've decided to go with my new lover CONDITIONER! Yes, you've read this post correctly, I will only be involved with sulfate free, moisture rich, creamy, CONDITIONER.

On a serious note, we all know that sulfate is not good for our hair. Especially curly hair. We have a hard enough time keeping black hair's moisture levels up. If it has sulfate in it then you should pass it by. So why in the world do they put sulfae in these products to begin with? Ummmm, my guess is because they want you to buy the rest of their products in order to put the moisture back into your hair that their shampoos stole. ( Just a little conspiracy theory *giggles*) The evolution of the cowash is worth trying!

What is the Cowash?

Cowashing is using conditioner to clean the scalp and hair while adding moisture instead of using shampoo.

Defining Natural Curls With Cowashing

1. Jump in the shower and do a normal cowash. Manipulate the hair without disturbing the curl pattern. Gently stroke your hair in a downward motion as if you were milking it. This will help remove dirt without disturbing the curl pattern. Rinse as usual.

2. Begin to shingle your hair starting at the back. Bringing a few hair clips into your shower is very helpful for this step. Remove any access conditioner by using the "milking technique" I mentioned earlier.

3. Now this is where it gets tricky. DO NOT USE A COMB OR BRUSH Only use your fingers. Detangle gently while encouraging your curls to behave.

4. Shake your head back and forth, and side to side. Stay in the shower for this step because it can get messy!

5. Blot your curls gently with a micro fiber towel, just enough to catch the drips. Finger style to help curls to take shape. After this, you're ready to go!

Moisturizing With Conditioner

I actually stumbled upon this option by accident. After running out of moisturizer I grabbed a bottle of conditioner and decided, “ It couldn’t hurt”. Now I have discovered that many women do this. How great is that? Was this a hidden secret all along? Or did everyone know about this but me? It's a cheap and great way to moisturize dry curls without sacrificing on hydration. Just use your conditioner in the same manner you would your moisturizer and your hair will be soft and manageable. Yay, for the cowash!

Yarn Braids AKA Genie Locs

Over the weekend my sister and I got into a conversation about Yarn Braids aka Genie Locs. I remember these from years ago. I'm so glad that their making a come back! I never had them myself, but I remember seeing them on other people thinking that they looked really nice.

After I take my brads out, I'm thinking about putting my own set in. They're installed similar to the way you would do ordinary hair extensions. I've always been a fan of locs but, I just can't commit to them. This will be a great way for me to enjoy the style until I'm ready to go back to curls. Speaking of curls, I'm very tempted to take my braids out a week early. It will be 5 weeks this Saturday. It's even more tempting after watching all of the wonderful yarn braid styles I've seen on youtube .

I have tons of yarn from making crochet hats. It's all packed away now but, I plan on bringing out my Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Black to measure and cut for my Genie Locs.

If you plan on doing yarn braids, make sure that you buy acrylic yarn. Wool or any other type may break or permanently loc your hair!

"For those of you that are interested in the steaming method that you keep hearing about, I would like to share my experience using this method with you. I first heard about this method a couple of years ago reading my book textured tresses it talks about the benefit of steaming the hair, I back then did not know that you could buy this appliance and have it in your home, then I joined HT and heard some ladies were using the steam method on their hair, then I ran across HT member Cassandra (my dear friend) that I have grown very close to, my 2nd message to her asking about her experience with the steamer since she was the 1st I heard talk about this, then other members shared her experience with us saying they were having great results with their steamers, after this I was sold that this treatment would benefit me because everyone that I had spoken to has great hair and they were receiving even better results with their steamers. so I decided to invest in my very own. after investigating the benefits of steaming and finally using it myself I learned that steaming in addition to opening up the follicles opens up the hair cuticle allowing the conditioner to really penetrate the hair shaft. steaming the hair is a way of opening the hair shaft and incorporating moisture into the hair that helps to stop dryness and breakage. steaming is great if you are experiencing drying & falling hair due to chemical abuse. it is even said that since the steamer is opening up the follicles in the scalp that it helps the hair to grow faster. I have even used my pre-poo hot oil treatments with this before washing my hair. Coconut, olive and jojoba oil are great for this, I have been using my Hairveda vatika frosting which I love. Hair Steaming even makes the hair soft, I have found that my hair is as soft as a baby dolls. I have now been using my steamer for a while now and I am sold, I thought my hair was healthy already but it has definitely benefited from this.It is now a staple in my haircare regimen.
The directions for steaming are quite simple just wash and put conditioner on the hair or you can massage oil in the scalp, put plastic cap on and sit under steamer for 15-30 min. If the hair is extremely dry I suggest 30 min. I have even sat under it for 45 min with no problems. they say you only need to steam once every 2 wks but I wash my hair sometimes twice a week so I do this at least for one of my washings.
special note:

A hair steamer uses distilled water to protect the inside of the machine so make sure if you buy one you have this on hand.

If you don't have a steamer you can still incorporate this into your haircare regimen, just wash and condition and put a hot towel on the head covered by a plastic cap .

There is also a product called Micro hair cap, it comes with microwavable gel packs that you put into the pockets of the cap and you allow it to stay on the hair until the gel packs cool down, it is said to be great for scalp and hair treatments. you can purchase this at sizta2sizta.com.

Update as of 9/08: I have found that I only need to steam once every 2 weeks to reap the benefits of steaming, anymore steaming than that my hair reverts and does not hold a style for more than a day."

Why should I use aloe vera in my hair care regimen? How can it benefit my hair and how do I use it?

Aloe Vera is commonly known as a medicinal plant. It derives from Africa and is considered to be a tropical plant even though you will find in amongst the catus plants in many grocery store. For ages, aloe vera has been used for it's healing and soothing properties. It's very popular as a topical treatment for skin conditions especially sunburn it's also found in many shampoos and conditioners. So how can you use 100% aloe vera in your hair care regimen? Let's list a few ways....

1. As a conditioner. If you have the time to create your own conditioning mixture you can add aloe vera in with it to help moisturize, strengthen, and soothe damage strands.

3. As a moisturizing hair spritz. Aloe vera can also be purchased as a juice. Many whole food stores carry it by the gallon.

Defining Curls With Conditioner

Using conditioner is a great alternative to using puddings and gels. Shingling your hair with conditioner will help you with defining curls without leaving it hard and crunchy.

1. Jump in the shower and do a normal cowash. Manipulate the hair without disturbing the curl pattern. Gently stroke your hair in a downward motion as if you were milking it. This will help remove dirt without disturbing the curl pattern. Rinse as usual.

2. Begin to shingle your hair starting at the back. Bringing a few Butterfly Clips into your shower is very helpful for this step. Remove any access conditioner by using the "milking technique" I mentioned earlier.

3. Now this is where it gets tricky. DO NOT USE A COMB OR BRUSH ( even a denman!)Only use your fingers. Reserve detangling for your once a week deep conditioning treatment.

4. Shake your head back and forth, and side to side. Stay in the shower for this step because it can get messy!

5. Blot your curls gently with a microfiber towel, just enough to catch the drips. finger style your curls to help them take shape and you are ready to go!

Do you love flexi rods but hate how long they take to dry? Fret no more, I have the secret to a fast drying ( usually 30-45mins) flexi rod set.

1. Cowash and allow hair to become slightly damp (not dripping wet). This is the most important step!
2. Section hair and apply mouse, pudding, gel or setting lotion to each section prior to rolling it onto the rod.
3. Allow hair to dry under hooded dryer, style, and go!

Denman Brush and Diffuser For Curly Hair

Natural hair can be detangled easily with a Denman Brush . Locking in those curls with a diffuser is key especially when you're in a rush!

How do you define your natural curls? Do you rely on products or tools to assit you? Are you totally lost and in need of some help? Here are a few tips to get frizz free defined curls.

1.Use a moisture rich conditioner.( Try and skip the shampoo and do cowashes!)
2. Do not absorb the water out of your hair with a towel. Leave it dripping wet.
3. Section your hair off into at least 5 sections
4. Add product from root to tip, whether it be a curl activator, styling gel ( alcohol free) or a curling custard.
5. Use a Denman brush to distribute the product. Finger comb to style any stubborn hairs.
6. Use a diffuser on your dryer to lock in the curls.

Get Smooth Roots Out of Your Roller Sets

When I worked in the salon we hardly ever used the "blow out" method to smooth roots. Instead we concentrated on smoothing the roots during the roller setting processes. It's much easier to do on someone else's hair but with patience you can achieve flat roots using these simple tips......

1. Start with dripping wet hair keeping a water bottle handy to re-mist when needed.
2. Use magnetic rollers with metal clips or plastic covers.
3. Smooth the hair onto the roller using the flip method ( as if you were trying to curl your hair into a flip). This direction will give you the tightest tension in order to keep those roots smooth.
4. Doobie, or wrap the hair immediately after removing the rollers. Go back under the dryer for a few minutes or keep your hair wrapped for a few hours.

The results are smooth roots with less heat.

Even if your hair type has a tighter coil and you still feel the need to " blow out" roots, this will make the process quicker and more efficient.

Hair Care Terms Abbreviations and Lingo

Are you new to hair care and need a quick Hair Lingo Lesson? Are the terms confusing? Here are a few abbreviations and their meanings to get you started

BC or " Big Chop"- this indicates that there was a major hair cut to get rid of damaged or relaxed hair. This is most often done when transitioning from relaxed to natural.

TWA - Teeny Weeny Afro. Usually after a " Big Chop" the hair left over usually under 4 inches is commonly referred to as a " teeny weeny afro.

DC - Deep Condition- a conditioner the deeply penatrates the hair shaft inorder to infuse moisture.

Pre Poo- A application of various oils and conditioners to protect the hair prior to becoming shampooed.

No Poo - A method of cleaning the hair without involoving sufates or regular shampoo cleaning agents.

Co Wash - commonly used too describe the method of cleansing the hair and scalp with conditioner instead of traditional shampoo.

Dusting Ends - to trim away a very minimal amout of hair from the ends, usually 1/4 to 1/8.

Blow Out - the use of a blowdryer to smooth roots after a roller set. A round brush or paddle brush may be used to help with this.

Braid Out - The act of braiding the hair and then taking the style out once set to get waves and uniformed curls.

Twist Out - The act of doing a two strand twist to style the hair. Once the hair is set the twist are taken out and the hair has loose waves.

Bantu Knot Out- The act twisting the hair into knots and letting it set inorder to achieve ringlets and curls.

Bantu Knots and Braid Outs on Dry Hair

Waiting for your hair to dry can be time consuming. Here is how I complete braid outs and bantu knot styles on dry hair.

After a cowash I apply a leave-in conditioner and begin to detangle using a wide tooth comb. Allow hair to air dry ( or use a hooded dryer) at least 90%. Set your hair using the braid out or bantu knot method. Sit under the dryer for 30mins or allow it to set for at least 3 hours. Your hair will be completely dry and ready to style.

What is the Cowash?
Cowashing is using conditioner to clean the scalp and hair while adding moisture instead of using shampoo.

My Grandmother has always done this. I enjoy the moisture and softness that I get but, I'm still struggling with styling. My hair is not long enough to do many of the protective styles, so I don't have many options. The weekends are the only time that I can do a "under the dryer style", and weaves are out ( I'll save that for a later post). At this point it's actually a pain. Today's cowash will be done with Biotin Conditioner 16 oz. and then hopefully I will have time do something cute with my hair before picking up my son. I have so many time restraints lately and I want to look cute so if you ladies have any suggestions ( besides weaves) I would greatly appreciate them.
